Also, have you guys seen the junior & senior class identies? There were 2 classes that stood out especially with green paint on their faces and hair! It must be hard to wash all the paint off after today but perhaps the attention was worth it! My class decided to use yellow bubble blowers as our class identity.We blew bubbles in LT5 and in the canteen,maybe some of you guys noticed?

The untimely death of the 48-year-old vocal legend just a few days before the annual Grammy Awards this year has made this writer reflect on how music has transformed over the years with the creation of new genres to markedly different styles and marketing techniques.

There have been many good singers since Whitney first came into the music scene in 1985. But the late Ms. Houston is undoubtedly one of the rare greats. Back in the day when people just sang without any fancy music videos to accompany the wholesome good ‘ol-fashioned tunes. Songs of hope,  of pain and joy. Her vocal prowess is almost unmatched, with a vocal range spanning three octaves and a versatility that is hard to come by until this day.

It is likely we’ll never see another Whitney Houston in our lifetime.

So today, let us remember how this multi-Grammy award winning songstress showed us music that will be remembered for years to come.

Whitney Houston (9/8/63-11/2/12)

Robin Hobb’s Farseer trilogy, consisting of Assassin’s Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin Quest,  is anything but run off the mill. It is exceptional and despite being a fairly “traditional” fantasy with a vaguely Middle Ages setting, a kingdom in peril and a protagonist whom the fate of the world hangs upon, it deviates away from all conventional storylines. Her hero, FitzChivalry, is a royal bastard and by the mere fact of his lineage, he is both a threat and an embarrassment to his royal kin. What’s worst, his difficulties are compounded by the fact that not only is the magical Skill of his Farseer heritage manifested in him, but the Wit as well. With the Wit being a form of ancient magic that is misunderstood and feared by most people, Fitz is in for a hard life of deceit and concealment. The three books follow him as he grows, faces challenges, changes as he learns from experience.

The best thing about this book is that Fitz does not succeed in and triumphs over every single challenge. It is an accurate representation of life and the process of growing up and maturing. The painful moments are not spared and Hobb does not let Fitz be diminished by his failures. He is thick-headed, often wrong, and plagued by his regrets, but never once was he reduced to a typical angsty teenager, remaining likeable, witty, and multi-dimensional. The ending of the Assassin’s Quest, and of the Farseer trilogy, tugs at heartstrings as well as acknowledges the fact that no one can come out of a journey unscarred, and that we may have to make sacrifices that benefit others for a greater good. Bittersweet and satisfying, the Farseer trilogy is definitely worth reading for all fans of the fantasy genre and goes to show that popularity is not an indicator of quality when it comes to books.

Welcome JC1s to the best two years of your life!

It’s great to see that so many of you have integrated so well into VJC, acting as if you’ve been here for months already.  It wasn’t easy distinguishing between JC1s and JC2s today, and I believe we all owe it all to a fantastic orientation. Kudos to you, orientation adhoc, OGLs, freshies, and all who made this year’s orientation such a success!

CCA Walkabout!

With over 60 different CCAs in VJC, CCAs are definitely an integral part of any Victorians life. Worrying over which CCA to join? Don’t fret; during the CCA walkabout this Wednesday (8 Feb 2012), your enthusiastic seniors will be more than willing to tell you more about their CCAs! The best CCA is of course, subjectif, ah I mean subjective and it is entirely up to you to decide!

Sea Sports Carnival!

Making use of VJC’s prime location by the sea, the sea sports carnival is definitely an opportune moment to get to know your classmates better and to bond through some wet fun! Expect jousting, cheers and mass dances this Friday (10 Feb 2012) at the iconic East Coast Park. JC2 students won’t be missing out on the action as well; we’ll be having class picnics and chilling by the beach.

To end off the week with a bang, be sure to be at the ever popular mass dance at Suntec! This year, the mass dance at Suntec promises to be the most spectacular yet, with a brand new mass dance! I hope you remember all your dance moves, because you’re going to need them! If you have forgotten, the dance moves can be found here, courtesy of VJC Student Council, so do refresh your memory. The mass dance at Suntec is one of the greatest milestones of any Victorians journey in VJC, go check out you’re seniors comments on the mass dances here on Facebook!

Be warned,it’s 15 minutes long!

The song is a little less catchy than Roly Poly but has an interesting chorus with surprisingly sad lyrics as it sounds like an upbeat song.

You may not think much of this song at first but I guarantee that the addictive chorus will be stuck in your head after listening to the song !My favourite part is the starting part of the song.There is  actually no climax in this song but it uses a repetitive hook to catch the attention of listeners.

The X Factor: USA recently concluded its season premier with a bang, the winner being Melanie Amaro. Riding on the victory of Melanie Amaro (in my opinion, a potential Diva), I would like to introduce all of you to several songs from note-worthy Divas!

In this series, I’ll like to have the honour of introducing you to two songs from two wonderful women who have made a significant impact in the music industry. First up, we have “I Have Nothing“ by Whitney Houston!

This song is released as a single from the movie “The Bodyguard” and peaked at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, among other awards. This song is brilliantly sung by Whitney Houston because one can feel the emotions and feelings she injects into every note . My favourite part has to be the build-up towards the chorus where she gradually sets the atmosphere and finally belts out strong and solid notes in the chorus. I bet your grandmother would love it too.

Whitney Houston’s list of awards include: 2 Emmy Awards, 6 Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, 22American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. She is also one of the world’s best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums and singles worldwide. If that isn’t good enough for you, I wonder what is.

Next up, we have my personal favourite, “Listen” by Beyonce!

Once again, “Listen” was written specifically for the 2006 film “Dreamgirls” whose lyrics make reference to tenacity, love, the refusal to defer dreams and finally rise towards fame. This song has a lot of meaning to it if closely listened to and the sound of Beyonce’s voice is heavenly. The Queen of R&B has the amazing talent of executing both soft and loud parts smoothly and gracefully, allowing her listeners to experience her feelings as she sings the song. I like the Bridge the most because it is when her voice is the strongest and has the most emotions to it. Indeed, this is a song not to be missed.

 Like Whitney Houston, just mentioning Beyonce’s list of awards from 2009 onwards would make your jaw drop. In total, she has won 16 Grammy Awards, 11 MTV Video Music Awards, and a Billboard Millennium Award. In 2009, Billboard named her the Top Radio Songs Artist of the 2000s decade, and ranked her as the 4th overall Artist of the decade (and as the First Female Artist of that period). Beyonce has also sold 75 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. With achievements like these at the age of 30, she could practically “run the world” in time to come.

Imagine surviving the As, the Os, whatever major exams and probably a worldwide catastrophe and singing this song, “Look at me now!” (with Nick providing that really snazzy beat in the background)

I must say Karmin’s cover of Chris Brown’s original song is pretty ingenious, and to be really frank, I like the cover more than I do the original. And hey, can Amy rap! I mean, Busta Rhyme/Lil Wayne’s rap verses when delivered well leaves the rest of the world behind in slow mo, and she really did justice to them.

(Oh, and if you’re planning to learn the verses, you probably want to learn the Karmin cover because it’s more PG and if you’re going to be rapping in school. Ahem)
